Great news for desert residents and visitors:  Rita Wilson will headline the 2nd annual Beamer Awards on January 25, 2014. The event marks the official gala opening of the new Rancho Mirage High School state of the arts Galen Theatre.  For those of you who don’t keep up with the latest show biz news, Rita is not only an actress (her movies include Sleepless In Seattle, Its Complicated, and Larry Crowne; on stage she portrayed Roxie Hart on Broadway in Chicago; her TV roles include Law & Order, Frasier, The Good Wife and astronaut Frank Borman’s wife in the series, From The Earth To the Moon).  She produced My Big Fat Greek Wedding on the screen and “My Big Fat Greek Life” for TV.  Now this multi- tasked lass is getting raves for her debut Decca CD “AMFM.” Sting, Bruce Springsteen, Robert De Niro and Kristen Chenoweth were among friends who turned out to cheer her last April when she headlined with her vocals at NY’s popular 54 Below.  And talent runs in the family. Rita has been happily married to Tom Hanks since April 1988.

The Beamer Awards were established as a fundraiser last year by Jamie Kabler with co-chairs Donna MacMillan and Stacey Mathewson to help fund the Betty Ford Center’s unique children’s program inspired by Lois Horvitz.  The program gives youth between the ages of 7 and 12 an understanding that they are not alone and not to blame for their parents addiction. It gives them hope. Animation in books and now video (a costly program) makes this program assessable worldwide.

Like fine wine, entertainment legends ripen with age. Carol Channing, an amazing 92, heads to NY and Fire Island this week. She headlines at the Ice Palace on Fire Island Aug. 24, following in the footsteps of recent legendary performers Chita Rivera and Liza MinnelliTommy Tune, who will be in the Ice Palace audience, toasts Carol at a private bash in his Manhattan digs the following night.
